The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed its field officers and state administrators to immediately eliminate operational lapses, streamline electoral logistics, and uphold strict institutional neutrality as preparations intensify for the 2027 General Elections.

The directive was issued on Monday, September 28, 2026, during the opening ceremony of the North-West Zonal Interactive Meeting and Readiness Assessment held at the Coronation Hall, Kaduna State. The gathering forms part of INEC’s nationwide, six-zone operational tour designed to evaluate field readiness, address administrative bottlenecks, and stress test technical infrastructure at the state and local government levels.

Speaking at the event at 10:00 AM, the Chairman of INEC, Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, emphasized that the Commission’s success in 2027 will not be judged by strategic documents produced at its Abuja headquarters, but by the integrity, efficiency, and neutrality demonstrated at the 176,846 polling units across the country.

”We are moving out of the planning phase into an era of active operational deployment and readiness assurance,” Amupitan declared. “We cannot afford fragmented administrative procedures, disjointed logistics execution, or any perception of bias.

Every official must remain strictly neutral, professional, and competent. Our task is to safeguard the vote, eliminate distribution bottlenecks for Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and restore public trust in the electoral process.”

Echoing the Chairman’s sentiments, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, reaffirmed during a press briefing at 2:00 PM that the Commission maintains no preference for any candidate or political organization.

”INEC has no candidate, no preferred political party, and no agenda other than the total fidelity of the electoral outcome to the express will of the Nigerian voters,” Olumekun stated. “We are instituting standardized operational protocols across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to ensure that administrative errors or human gaps no longer threaten election day operations.”

Also addressing participants at the venue, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Kaduna State, Chief Arthur Adewole, highlighted ongoing field-level preparations, noting that the physical verification of non-sensitive electoral materials and continuous staff training were already underway in all 23 local government areas of the state.

The interactive meeting in Kaduna follows a similar strategic operational session hosted earlier this month at the Continental Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, where state Administrative Secretaries were mandated to adopt unified operational standards modeled after lessons learned from recent off-cycle governorship elections.

Key milestones announced during the Kaduna session ahead of the 2027 polls include; Nationwide collection of Permanent Voter Cards is scheduled to commence on October 9, 2026, following the completion of data synchronisation.

Political parties are required to submit candidate lists via the INEC online nomination portal between October 1 and October 31, 2026.

Public campaigns for Presidential and National Assembly elections will officially commence on November 18, 2026, while campaigns for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly will begin on December 15, 2026.

The Commission reaffirmed that voter accreditation for the main polls, fixed for February 20, 2027 (Presidential/National Assembly) and March 6, 2027 (Governorship/State Assemblies), will strictly rely on the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and integrated electronic result transmission protocols.
