The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process ahead of the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The pledge was delivered during a high-level diplomatic engagement held on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting brought together Nigerian government representatives and a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Pre-Election Fact-Finding Mission, led by former Vice-President of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Victor Foh.

Speaking on behalf of the host nation, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu detailed the legal and operational frameworks established to guarantee seamless polls. She underscored transparent voter accreditation, effective result management, and early resolution of electoral disputes as primary prerequisites for credible elections.

To safeguard the process, she outlined coordinated operational strategies among security agencies aimed at protecting voters, electoral personnel, and observers from violence or intimidation.

Addressing broader integrity challenges, Amb. Odumegwu-Ojukwu highlighted active state measures to curb misinformation and disinformation that could jeopardize public trust.

She also noted dedicated policy initiatives designed to improve electoral participation for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and other historically marginalized groups. Reaffirming Nigeria’s open stance on international monitoring, she added that the country stands ready to welcome accredited regional and global election observers.

In response, ECOWAS Mission Leader Victor Foh welcomed the assurances and expressed optimism regarding the country’s state of preparedness. He emphasized that as the largest democracy in West Africa, Nigeria’s successful conduct of the 2027 general elections carries immense significance for regional stability, democratic governance, and economic growth across the continent.

Following the closed-door session, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Oluwafemi Adeniyi issued an official communique summarizing the outcome of the dialogue. Adeniyi noted that the meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their shared dedication to promoting democratic governance, stability, and peace across West Africa.

The ECOWAS fact-finding delegation will continue its stakeholder consultations in Abuja with political parties, civil society organizations, and electoral bodies throughout the week.
