The Federal Government has assured the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) of its unwavering commitment to conducting peaceful, credible, transparent, and inclusive general elections in 2027.
The pledge was reaffirmed on Friday, October 30, 2026, during a high-level bilateral meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, highlighted the administration’s readiness to ensure full adherence to Nigeria’s Constitution and electoral guidelines.
She emphasized crucial operational requirements to guarantee democratic integrity, including transparent voter accreditation, institutional preparedness, efficient result management, and the swift resolution of post-election disputes.
”The Federal Government remains fully dedicated to creating a secure and level playing field for all political participants,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu stated. “We are prioritizing robust security coordination to protect voters, observers, and electoral officials, while actively tackling misinformation and expanding franchise accessibility for persons with disabilities and vulnerable groups.”
Representing the regional bloc, the ECOWAS Delegation Lead and Pre-Election Assessment Mission Coordinator, Dr. Abdel-Fatau Musah, commended Nigeria’s proactive engagement and democratic leadership in West Africa. He noted that as the region’s largest economy and democracy, a peaceful electoral outcome in Nigeria remains vital to sub-regional stability and governance.
Addressing reporters following the closed-door session, Ministry Spokesperson Kimiebi Ebenfa confirmed that both delegations agreed to establish joint technical committees. These frameworks will facilitate ongoing regional election monitoring, security consultations, and early-warning mechanisms in the lead-up to the 2027 polls.
