The newly elected Senator for Enugu North Senatorial District, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is positioned to decisively sweep the 2027 general elections across Enugu State.

Asogwa made the assertion on Wednesday after receiving his official Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following his victory in the recently concluded Enugu North senatorial bye-election.

Chief Asogwa, a prominent political administrator and former Director-General of the “Tomorrow is Here” campaign, clinched the senatorial seat after polling 162,360 votes. He overwhelmingly defeated his closest rival, Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 9,299 votes.

The bye-election was conducted to fill the vacancy left by the late Labour Party Senator, Okey Ezea, who passed away in late 2025.

Speaking to journalists and a jubilant crowd of supporters immediately after receiving the certificate, Asogwa stated that his landslide victory was a clear indication that the political landscape in Enugu State has fundamentally shifted.

”This certificate is not just a symbol of our victory at the polls; it is a mandate from the people who are tired of the old order,” Asogwa said. “What we witnessed in Enugu North is just a dress rehearsal. By 2027, the APC will clean and clear all electoral positions in Enugu State. The opposition is completely dismantled.”

Enugu State has historically been a stronghold of the PDP, but recent political realignments including a massive shift of key stakeholders toward the APC have drastically altered the state’s dynamics. State Governor Peter Mbah had previously congratulated Asogwa, calling the bye-election result a “statement victory” that underscores the APC’s emergence as the unquestionable dominant political force in the state.

Asogwa emphasized that his immediate focus would be providing high-impact, quality representation for the six local government areas making up Enugu North: Nsukka, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Uzo-Uwani, Igbo-Etiti, and Udenu.

While the APC celebrates its newfound breakthrough in the South-East zone, the outcome continues to generate friction. The PDP candidate, Nestor Ezeme, has openly rejected the election results, citing allegations of irregularities and voter intimidation.

Despite the looming legal challenges from the opposition, Asogwa maintained that the people’s voice had spoken clearly through the ballot. He urged opposition members to concede defeat and join hands with his administration to develop the senatorial district.

With the Certificate of Return officially in hand, Chief Ikeje Asogwa is expected to be sworn into the Red Chamber of the National Assembly in the coming days, officially establishing the APC’s strongest legislative foothold yet in Enugu State.
