CENTRE for Memories, the Enugu-based arts, history, and documentary centre, tomorrow starts a week-long celebration of Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe’s epic novel that riverted deep global interest to Africa, and its story.
Odeluwa Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, renowned author will deliver the keynote address at the annual event that draws attention to the ground-breaking 1958 novel that re-directed the course of African history, literature, cuture, stating their importance and place in a world that was writing African history to flavour the impact of colonialism.
Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Mr. Obi Asika is the Special Guest of Honour. Asika will also commission the mythical Umuofia Village at the Centre For Memories, 2, Awgu Street, Independence Layout, Enugu, Nigeria.
Published after several rejections, The Times of London Literary Supplement said Things Fall Apart, “genuinely succeeds in presenting tribal life from inside while patterns of feeling and attitudes of mind appear clothed in a distinctive African imagery, written neither up nor down”.
Chief Ben Etiaba, Chairman of the Festival, said it ends on 5 July with a grand command performance at Ajọfia Nnewi.
Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart, died in 2013.
