The Benue state government has raised the alarm over snake attacks on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), across the camps in Benue state.
The Executive Secretary, Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Sir James Iorpuu, who disclosed this today (Wednesday, September 11), at the continuous distribution of food and non-food items to the displaced population in the state at SEMA premises in Makurdi, lamented that in recent months, the Benue SEMA has faced the challenge of snake bites among the IDP populations.
He lamented that some 16 persons have been bitten by snakes in the last two weeks, last week of August and first week of September, explaining that the 16 victims are occupants of Daudu 1 and Daudu 2 IDP camps in Guma LGA of the state and Ichwa IDP camp in Makurdi, the State capital.
Iorpuu reported that the state government has successfully treated over 16 cases across various camps and no life has been lost, thanks to the swift action of the health teams and support from partners, disclosing that all the 14 IDP camps across the State, including Ikyogen refugee camp, has been fumigated to reduce the occurrence of the snake bites.
He, however, noted that the agency still requires additional medical supplies and support to prevent further tragedies, urging the development and humanitarian partners, both local and international, to continue supporting them in the crucial area.
Iorpuu also announced that Benue-SEMA would soon commence IDP farm projects in three local government areas including Kwande, Logo and Gwer-West.
“These farms are not just about food production; they represent hope, empowerment, and self-reliance for our displaced communities. They will allow our IDPs to contribute to their well-being, while also addressing food insecurity in the camps,” the SEMA boss explained.
Iorpuu thanked Governor Hyacinth Alia for his unwavering support and recent donation of a tractor for the IDP farm project describing his gesture as a significant step in ensuring the success of the initiative and a show of his dedication to the welfare of the displaced people.
The SEMA boss also appreciated the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their recent donation of 1347 cartons of liquid fertilizer to Benue State saying the contribution will enhance the productivity of the farming projects and ensure that the IDPs can produce food sustainably.
He assured all IDPs and Benue people that all relief materials meant for the people will be distributed openly and transparently, adding that he would ensure that none is diverted.
The items distributed to the IDP include 2500 bags of 25kg rice, 350 dignity kits, 294 bags of garri, 2110 cartons of noodles,139 gallons of red and groundnut oil, 127 cartons of Maggi, 129 bags of salt, 52 bags of sugar, 290 blankets 52 cartons detergent, 450 bags of maize among others.
