The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of ten suspects in connection with an alleged assassination attempt on a traditional ruler in the state.
Spokesperson for the command, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, disclosed this in Akure on Saturday, saying the suspects were apprehended following swift intelligence-led operations carried out by the police.
According to her, the monarch, whose name was not immediately released for security reasons, narrowly escaped death when armed men invaded his palace earlier in the week. The attackers reportedly stormed the premises in the night, shooting sporadically before security operatives repelled them.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed a thorough investigation into the incident. So far, ten persons have been arrested in connection with the attack, and they are currently undergoing interrogation.”
She added that weapons and other incriminating materials were recovered from the suspects, while manhunt for other fleeing accomplices was ongoing.
The police assured residents of Ondo State that the perpetrators of the crime would be brought to justice and urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
Community leaders in the affected area have also called on the state government to beef up security around palaces, warning that repeated attacks on traditional rulers could destabilize the peace of the state.
